On set with Amelia Gierschick

Say hello to Amelia Gierschick.

Amelia is only 5 but she is already a positive peer model. This gorgeous little model has Down Syndrome and that hasn’t stopped or slowed her down to pursue her dreams and enjoy life to the MAX!

We sat down with this amazing young lady and here is what we chatted about between giggles and chocolate...

TLM: What is the best thing that has happened to you this year?

A: I have to say starting prep school. I was so excited to meet my new teacher and make new friends! I love school as I learn so many new things and get also to have playtime with my friends. I love singing and it's been so cool to join the school choir.

Learning to ride my bike is also been one of my best achievements this year!

TLM: Tell me something interesting about yourself that not many people know:

A: I have Down Syndrome. This means I have an extra chromosome, and my mummy says the extra chromosome makes me extra special but also extra cheeky... Also, when I was a tiny baby, I flew to England to meet my nanna and get christened.

TLM: Modelling is a new adventure for you - what made you leap and have a go?

A: Well I love dressing up and posing to have my photo taken so my mum suggested why not try to do this professionally? I love it and I get so excited when I look at the photos or videos of me afterwards.

TLM: What do you want to to be when you grow up?

A: One of my favourite activities is playing doctors and nurses. I take it in turns to be the Doctor or the nurse and then the patient. I take this game very seriously and pay close attention when I go and see my Doctor so I can learn new techniques that I try out on my mummy. So, I think I would like to be a nurse when I grow up or a teacher... you see, I love being in charge and boss people around.

TLM: What is your favourite thing to wear that you will never throw out?

A: I absolutely love, LOVE my Wiggles pj's. My mummy must wash them and dry them out on the same day, so I can put them back on again. I also love wearing my gum boots as often as I can - even in Summer!

TLM: Can you tell us a little bit about what you have been up to lately, in terms of photo shoots or acting?

A: I love going to my dancing lessons every week and I have even performed on stage at the annual dance concert. This was great fun and I didn’t get too nervous even though there were a lot of people watching. Also modelling for The Little Mag is my first proper photo shoot which I really loved doing.

TLM: What is your favourite thing to do in the Winter?

A: I love climbing trees and fences and play in big puddles in the park… It is so much fun getting wet and covered in mud. I also like painting.

TLM: Do you remember the first job you did, and how did it make you feel?

A: My very first modelling job was my photo shoot in Emerald for The Little Mag. I remember that it was such a long drive to get there that I fell asleep. But I was excited about getting dressed up and posing for photos and really enjoying doing all the different actions for the camera. I was actually sad when it was over, and time to go home.

TLM: Are you with a talent agency, if so who, and how long have you been with them?

A: I am a registered model with Casting Kids, and I joined them just after my birthday last July.

TLM: Have you done any modelling or acting workshops before? How do you think it has helped you gain confidence and learn more about the industry?

A: My dancing class helps me build my confidence and teaches me how to express myself through movement. It has also helped me to learn how to follow instructions and just be myself. I just love to smile and giggle.

TLM: Do you follow any models or actors you admire on social media, if so who, and why are they the best?

A: I love Madeline Stewart, she is a super model and has Down Syndrome just like me. She shows me that I can do anything I dream of and that having Down Syndrome will not stop me from achieving great thing

TLM: Do you have any special talents, instruments you play or sports you do?

A: I love singing and dancing with all my heart. It is lovely to see the smiles on peoples’ faces when I sing even though I don’t have much tune in my voice yet.

TLM: If you were to get the coolest modelling or acting job tomorrow, what would it be doing, who for, and why?

A: My dream job would be to be a dancer in a Wiggles DVD. But my next coolest job would be a fashion model for some big retailers such as Target, Kmart, or Bunnings. It would be cool to see my picture in magazines, on TV or even on toy packages…

TLM: What advice would you give someone who was thinking about getting involved in doing modelling or acting but may think - I am too shy or I don’t know what to do, I don’t have any experience …

A: Well if they really like to do it, they should talk to their mummy so they can organise it. The people who take the photos are very friendly and kind and tell you what you need to do next. Just go for it, you’ ll have lots of fun and your mummy is always nearby.

TLM: If you had one wish what would it be?

A: I have a very happy life already… but I’d love to meet the Wiggles in person!
